Tsai was born in Malaysia in 1957, a leading figure of Taiwanese New Wave Cinema. His second feature Vive L’ Amour (1994) won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 51st Venice Film Festival. Face (2009) became the first film acquired by the Louvre Museum. His long-term project “Slow March” has produced seven shorts to this date. Feature film Stray Dogs (2013) won the Grand Jury Prize at the 70th Venice Film Festival and Best Director at the 50th Golden Horse Awards. Premiered in 2014, the stage production The Monk from Tang Dynasty performed in Brussels, Vienna, Gwangju and Taipei.
