A young Muslim woman faces an inner struggle against the imposing wall of her cultural and religious background, while developing a relationship with a rebellious female artist.
In a Southern Thai town, a once-sandy beach eroded by high tides is now replaced by artificial rock seawalls. There, two young women meet. Shati is a local Muslim woman from a conservative family; Fon is an activist-turned-visual artist who is in town for the opening of her new art exhibition. The deeper they get to know each other, the bigger Shati’s internal conflict with her traditional background—which forbids same-sex relationships. Caught between fear and desire, she is reminded of the old cautionary tales from her childhood told by her late and beloved grandmother. On Fon’s last night in town, Shati and Fon reunite and consummate their relationship for the first time. When they wake up, the strange other-worldly occurrences in the tales of Shati’s grandmother gradually start to happen. Meteorites fall from the sky, the sea level rises, and menacing dark shadows lurk at every turn. Different worlds are colliding. A storm is brewing. Whether it’s all a dream or not, Shati is making a decision to forge a path for herself. She comes to terms with who she is.
